Founded by Fr. Michael McGivney of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, CT, the Knights of Columbus was chartered by the State of Connecticut in March 1882 as a fraternal benefit society. The Knights were formed to provide mutual aid and financial assistance to widows and orphans....the Order is still true to its
founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.
In its 126th year, the Knights of Columbus has grown to more than 13,000 councils and
1.7 million members, contributing time and energy worldwide to their communities through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, and public relief works.
Last year alone, in addition to raising and donating more than
$151 million to charitable needs and projects, Knights volunteered more than
69 million hours of their time to charitable causes. We undertake these acts of charity because we see those in need through the eyes of faith. Moreover, in the Knights of Columbus, we approach these acts of charity together.
Pope Benedict XVI calls this the “practice of love...as a community.”
Knights Council 11376 provides on average of
2,000 hours of volunteer work and community involvement a year.
